The setting of this tragic tale takes place in the midwest during the cusp of The Great Depression. A woman named Elsa comes from a wealthy family but is views as a burden and is not really part of the family but rather unseen. Until one night she makes a decision that will change her life forever.
As storms brew on the horizon, the reader observes a family fighting to keep their farm alive, a broken marriage, and the determination of one woman who will do anything for her family. She begins to learn to tend to and love not only others, but herself as well. With sacrifice, immovable strength, and courage, this story is a must for historical-fiction lovers. You will be gripped by the hardship, loss and strength of the human spirit beautifully laid out throughout its pages, I cannot recommend this book enough.
Due to the historical context, it is a hard book to chew on. The reason I loved this book so much was because it was very relatable. Yet, the gloomy backdrop of the book was also what made it such a treasure. Though I am separated from the Great Depression by decades, I found this book very relatable. Coming from a hard background myself I saw myself at times in Elsa at times. I related to her struggling with and overcoming obstacles. Her tenacious yet quiet spirit drew me in and caused me to have respect for her. This book was not just a good read—it was a healing experience for me. Maybe it will be for you too! Happy Reading!
