Book Lovers is a story about a literary agent living the life in New York City. Nora has it all—her dream job, a beloved sister and family, and the Big Apple itself. What more could a girl ask for? Taking a pause from her dream life, Nora travels with her pregnant sister to North Carolina to get some quality time together before the baby comes. Much to Nora’s surprise, her arch nemesis editor Charlie, an editor from NYC, is in the same town. Stuck in a small town they are constantly running into each other. As the hot summer nights starts to get to them, so does the unraveling of Nora’s life.
This sweet rom-com book will make you laugh aloud and have some heartache for these crazy characters.
Okay— I know I am REALLY late with reading any Emily Henry books, but I was hesitant for a couple of reasons. One, I have a really hard time with contemporary novels due to the fact that the dialogue is usually terrible. Second, I am wary when it comes to sexual content. Example, Bridgerton. Yet I also despise cheesy rom-coms, example Hallmark. So I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read any of Emily Henry’s books, thinking I would encounter one—if not both—of my least favorite rom-coms faux pas.
But I gave in. This book reminded me in some ways of You’ve Got Mail, which is one of my favorite movies of all time, so I thought I would give it a shot. I really struggled with the first couple of chapters. I thought the dialogue was terrible and I was about to give up, but I continued on. To my surprise it got better! It’s very cliche and annoying at times, but I enjoyed the characters and their complexities and that’s what kept me reading.
Content Warnings:
There is one very descriptive scene with the main characters, involving a “pool” that is spicy, but skipping past this scene is easily avoidable. I honestly would reread this book again. Like I said, I enjoyed the characters and their issues, and it felt truer to real life which I appreciate. I wouldn’t highly recommend this book due to the occasionally spicy content, but if that doesn’t bother you I think you would enjoy this book more than I did.
So the question remains, will I read another Emily Henry book? Probably not. Maybe? I’m not sure. I am thinking about trying Beach Read, since I’ve heard it’s similar and it’s about “book people” but I probably won’t be picking up any of her other books.I’ve heard it’s a mix bag when it comes to this author so I think I’m good :-)
Happy Reading!
